Sverige-Amerika Stiftelsens årsmöte 2010

Your Royal Highness.  Your excellencies.  Ladies and gentlemen.  On behalf of this year’s fellows and scholarship recipients, I want to say that we are glad and grateful to be here today.  Some of us were unable to make it here, but I am sure they share our feeling of excitement for the upcoming year, and our feeling of gratitude towards the Sweden-America Foundation and its donors.

                 The Foundation recognizes the value in supporting different fields of study, because in each field there are challenges facing our world.  We will attempt to tackle at least a few of them.  I will mention three examples of what we will study.  One of us will study urban dimensions of global security challenges such as terrorism and climate change.  One of us will try to push the envelope of theoretical physics by using string theory in order to explain the basic nature of the Universe.  One of us will study atmospheric science, especially the roll of clouds in the climate system.  We have all paid attention to the recent volcano eruptions in Iceland, and are painfully reminded of how what goes on in the sky above us can have global effects. 

                 Another thing that can have global effects, but positive global effects, is supporting students who want to make a difference.  Thanks to the Foundation we are now able to pursue in depth studies in our respective fields. It is a privilege to be able to go to a university where our field is especially explored, and where we get a chance to work with leading scholars.  We have a busy time ahead of us, and we hope to make the most of it.  

                 As we are busy on the other side of the Atlantic, we know there are friends and family, some of them here today, who will miss us, and we will miss them.  But during our time away, we will build new relationships and gain new knowledge, and by the time we come back to Sweden we will have grown.  We know our loved ones want the best for us, and we can only be our best if we keep pushing and challenging ourselves.  By giving our best, we hope to achieve great things.

                 The representatives of the Foundation and its donors have achieved much already.  They are passing on the legacy of the organization to us by awarding us scholarships here today.  The Foundation has promoted cultural and scientific exchange for almost a hundred years, and many recipients have been in this privileged position before us.  This year, we are the lucky ones, and we are grateful to be the torch bearers for the time being, before we can pass it on.  We appreciate your faith in us.  Thank you.

Homecoming 2009

Advokat Peter Danowsky var årets talare på Homecoming, som gick av stapeln på Royal Bank of Scotland. Han berättade om sin tid som stipendiat på Columbia University 1974-75 där han studerade offentligrättslig juridik kring masskommunikation. Vi fick sedan följa Peters karriär och han bjöd både på många spännande rättsfall och roliga anekdoter.  

Peter Danowsky är sedan 1993 delägare i Danowsky & Partners Advokatbyrå. Han har som expert på tryckfrihet och medierätt medverkat som författare i flera böcker.

Därefter fick hemvända stipendiater kort presentera sig och trevligt mingel tog vid. Royal Bank of Scotland, där styrelseledamoten Reinhold Geijer är Nordenchef, bjöd hemvända stipendiater, donatorer och vänner på amerikansk mat och dryck.
